Eugenia String Project

&

Laikipia County Project

The Eugenia String Project will provide weekly lessons to students from local schools at the Eugenia Arts Center. Eugenia staff will co-ordinate schedules along with KICF faculty. KICF apprentices will serve as weekly tutors, with close supervision by KICF faculty. In addition to instruction in violin, viola, and cello, students will learn music through language and imitation. Singing and eurythmics will be integral. Students will learn to center a pitch, as well as copy rhythms from the spoken word (Swahili and English). Kenyan folk songs will provide examples of interval identification. Students will be encouraged to improvise and compose original works with graphic notation and other more intuitive methods. Additionally, our work will continue in Laikipia County with students who were participants in our flagship program, bringing lessons and mentorship to rural communities.
