Kicf Apprentices
Apprentices will include a select group of 8 to 12 string players, ages 18-30, who will study and teach students of their own during 2-year internships.
During their two-year internship, apprentices will:
Pursue a rigorous course of technical development on their instrument. Minimum 3 hours per day of individual practice is expected. Weekly Zoom lessons with private teachers. Periodic Master Classes with experts on a variety of topics.
Form ensemble groups with other apprentices and guest artists- regular coachings and performances
Perform 2 annual recitals, both solo and ensemble. Develop practice plans accordingly.
Develop a working knowledge of Music History and styles- within Africa, from the European tradition, and beyond.
Master music theory to become adept in all keys and common chord progressions. Become fluent in basic improvisation, as well as sight-singing (solfege).
Learn and develop pedagogy techniques, including a new Swahili curriculum
Develop an outreach concert presentation- for new audiences both young and old
Learn entrepreneurship. Guest lecturers and coaches will provide direction on everything required of a self-employed musician: social media (eg, IG, FB, and websites), basic sound & video editing, and visual marketing/graphic design (eg, Canva). After 2 years, apprentices will be expected to develop and maintain their own online marketing.
